Hungary has successfully negotiated with the European Commission to release billions of euros in EU funds that were previously inaccessible, conditional on the country’s commitment to a series of reforms. These reforms aim to address and improve transparency, governance, and the administration of EU funds, which have been areas of concern.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that Hungary has started implementing measures to tackle these issues. The proposed reforms include bolstering anti-corruption measures, enhancing oversight mechanisms, and becoming part of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, which signifies a significant step toward greater accountability.
As part of this agreement, Hungary stands to receive substantial financial support aimed at bolstering infrastructure, energy security, housing, transportation, and business development. The total package amounts to €16.2 billion, according to Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who highlighted this funding as crucial for the nation’s economic growth and investment strategies. Additional financial assistance may be unlocked if Hungary continues to advance reforms, particularly in the domains of higher education and academic governance.
The agreement also facilitates the full reintegration of Hungarian students into the Erasmus exchange program, beginning with the next academic year. This development is seen as a positive stride in educational exchange and cooperation within the EU.
Despite progress in these areas, migration policy remains a contentious topic in the ongoing dialogue between Hungary and the EU. Prime Minister Magyar expressed Hungary’s intention to maintain stringent border controls to curb illegal migration while fulfilling its European obligations. He underscored the necessity of robust protection of the EU’s external borders and reaffirmed that Hungary has no plans to establish migrant camps within its borders. This funding agreement represents a pivotal moment in mending the strained relations between Hungary and the European Commission, following years of intense disagreements over governance and judicial reforms.
